The Independent: Media coverage of events in Syria based on unverified videos..Sunday Times: Gunmen attack army, security forces, target public buildings

The Independent Newspaper Correspondent in Iraq and the Middle East, Patrick Cockburn, criticized the international media as it depends on videos filmed through the cameras of mobile phones which can’t be verified to cover the events witnessed in Syria and other countries in the region.

In an analytical essay published in the Independent, Cockburn indicated that the media coverage of the events in Syria and other countries such as Yemen and Libya depends on falsifying and fabricating videos and information.

He indicated that everyone has become sure that there is a lack of credibility in many of the items which were considered right and original at the beginning.

Cockburn talked about his personal experience to prove the impreciseness and the incredibility of the media coverage, saying that when he was wandering in the Iranian capital on Feb 27th he didn’t see any demonstrations in it, but later he watched a video on the You Tube showing a demonstration in Tehran with acts of violence which was given the same date.

The Correspondent indicated that he was strikingly astonished when he noticed that the demonstrators were wearing only shirts as the weather in Tehran was rainy and the temperature was below zero, and the men he watched at the streets were wearing jackets.

Sunday Times: Gunmen attack army, security forces, target public buildings

The Correspondent of the British Newspaper Sunday Times in Damascus, Hala Jaber, said that there is a lot of evidence on that gunmen managed to break through the demonstrations and gatherings witnessed in some Syrian cities as they attacked the headquarters of the army and the security forces and burnt the public buildings.

In an article published Sunday in the Newspaper under the title “Extremists’ Fire Burn Syria”, Jaber narrated her own experience which she went through while she was in Syria, indicating that when she was covering one of the demonstrations in Ma’arat al-Nu’man in Idleb, she saw bearded men provoking the soldiers and the security forces to open fire on the demonstrators.

She added that gunmen holding weapons were in the demonstration in Ma’arat al-Nu’man  where various types of weapons appeared such as rifles and rockets launch pads used by men with thick beards who were in their cars, pointing out that the weapons were carried up on light cars such as the ‘Pickup’ which don’t have registration plates.

Jaber said that the gunmen stormed into the police headquarters in the area as battles took place between them and the policemen inside the headquarters claiming the lives of 20 policemen as the gunmen burnt the place and the Justice Palace and other public buildings.

The Correspondent quoted one of Ma’arat al-Nu’man people as saying that the policemen who escaped from the massacre on June 10th hided in the houses of the city as he and his son rescued 25 of them and moved them to Aleppo secretly fearing the gunmen to come and kill them.

She indicated that there are increasing number of proves on the existence of weapons smuggled to Syria form Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey.
