Leader of Turkish main opposition, the Republican People’s Party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu criticized the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which is led by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyeb Erdogan, saying it has failed in both of its top foreign policy priorities.

“The AKP’s foreign policy pillars were zero problems with neighbors and the European Union – today we have problems with all of our neighbors and relations with the European Union have frozen”, Kilicdaroglu said in an interview with the Hurriyet Turkish Daily.
On the level of the government’s policy towards Syria, the leader of the Republican People’s Party charged the government of becoming “over-engaged” and a “took” of Western powers, amid efforts to improve ties with the US.

Kilicdaroglu stressed that the Turkish government is not including or informing any of the political parties about the foreign policy issues, further indicating, “They inform the US and others. They hear advice from Western powers, but they do not seek support from us”.

On a further level, Kemal Kilicdaroglu noted that human right abuses in the Middle East should be monitored and condemned, adding that his country’s ruling AKP party had always ignored the “ruling regime” of Syria until recently “as it moved to improve ties with the US”.
“Why didn’t they speak of human rights violations at the time? The Western powers now want to punish Syria. And using whom?” Kilicdaroglu wondered in reference to his country.
