Obama confirms US will veto Palestinian UN bid, Palestinians protest speech
US President Barack Obama confirmed on Wednesday to the acting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, that the “US will ensure the PA does not reach statehood via the UN without conducting direct talks with “Israel”.
After the UN General Assembly meeting, during which Obama declared his decision, White House National Security Council spokesman Ben Rhodes stated, “We would have to oppose any action at the UN Security Council including, if necessary, vetoing”.
The following day Thursday, Dozens of Palestinians gathered outside the PA office in Ramallah to protest the US President’s opposition to their legal bid to gain full recognition at the UN.
Protesters waved Palestinian flags, and held banners that read anti-Obama slogans including “Obama the hypocrite”.
Furthermore, Egyptian al-Ahram newspaper reported that activists in many Arab countries have called for staging mass protests to support the Palestinian bid for UN Statehood.
So far, the Arab mass demonstrations are being planned to be held on Friday in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya, to stress on the rightful Palestinian proposal for membership at the UN Security Council.
